I Call Myself Princess

This piece in development is by Jani Lauzon and was presented as staged readings in Native Earth‘s Weesageechak Begins to Dance festivals in 2013 and 2014.

This play tells the story of Tsianina Redfeather, a historic Creek/Cherokee singer who was involved in the Indianist movement with composer Charles Wakefield Cadman, and William, a present-day Métis struggling with his career choice as an opera singer. The play features some music from the opera that Cadman wrote, loosely based on Tsianina’s life: Shawenis (or The Robin Woman), which was the first American opera to presented at the Metropolitan Opera for more than a single season in 1918 and 1919. It’s a wonderful, complex story about the past, present, history and choices, and the seen and unseen.
